Local Stories

More than a few citizens—more like thousands—wouldn’t let a little rain stop the festivities at Quinlan Community Park on July 2.

Fireworks, fun spark freedom weekend

The Fourth of July weekend at Tawakoni was a celebration of community spirit and patriotism, with each day offering its own unique festivities. On July 2, Quinlan kicked off the weekend with a lively atmosphere, where even a sudden downpour couldn't dampen the spirits. Children splashed around, not only on the designated splash pad but also in the puddles created by the rain. As night fell, the sky lit up with a pyrotechnic display, painting the night with bursts of color and light. The following day, West Tawakoni continued the celebration with its own fireworks show, drawing families and friends together under the starlit sky with three bands performing for the crowd. Vendors with all types of crafts and wares for sale, including food trucks, snow cones and cotton candy. Finally, on July 4, Lone Oak hosted its annual parade that wound through the square, showcasing floats, music, and a sense of pride found in small towns. There were vendors and games during the afternoon. As darkness descended, the town gathered for a fireworks finale, a fitting end to a weekend filled with joy, unity, and the shared love of freedom. Quinlan Ford’s Eli Attaway and Colbie Tigue each won the coveted Thespy Award, competing against 1500 students with only 94 receiving the award. It was the first time in school history. Presented by Disney Live Entertainment, the young men took part in the educational theatre association program this summer.

Food pantry serves 2,645 families in June

The Lake Area Shared Ministries Food Pantry served 2,645 family units, representing 8,008 individuals, which is 105,800 pounds of food, said Executive Director Dian Wright.

“The heat is coming on strong, like always in Texas and LASM volunteers always strive to to improve our service to the community,” she said. “Without the support of our volunteers and generosity of our donors, we would not be able to continue to do God’s work in serving the community.”

Wright said the food pantry is transitioning from paper to a paperless system. “Change is always difficult, but we continue to soldier on.” She reminded everyone that Sept. 17 is North Texas Giving Day. “We hope and pray that you consider donating to the LASM. You can actually donate directly all year long and get more bang for your buck.”

Volunteers are always welcome, too. Give a few hours or all week.

City, QISD to host chamber luncheon

Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce’s July meeting will be held at DC Cannon Elementary School and hosted by the Quinlan ISD and City of Quinlan at 11:30 am Thursday, July 16.

“Please join us for our monthly luncheon and fellowship,” said Directors Tammie Anthony and Dena Sweeney. The location is next to Quinlan Community Park, which and this will be the official opening of the park extension and tree dedication in memory of Stacy Earls.

“The monthly luncheon and fellowship is a fun way to come and meet your fellow chamber members, local government leaders school districts and more. It’s also a great source for making contacts and making sure your business is noticed,” they said.

The park extension, which is a joint effort of both the city and school district, includes pickleball courts, lighted walking trail and exercise stations.

Joining the chamber recently were Taylor Hamill with Freedom Residential Services; Holt Custom Stoneworks; C&E Mowing; Quinlan Florist and Gifts; That I.T. Company; Dossani Pardise Management; Parkway Family Dental; Pro Roofing and Construction; Jefe’s Mexican Restaurant; Honey’s Sweets & Treats; and Bow Wow Bunkhouse.

A shot from streaming, Quinlan South Fire Chief Ryan Biggers presents a powerpoint presentation on the need for a south Hunt County emergency services district.

Commissioners hold hearings on ESD

Hunt County Commissioners conducted a public hearing Tuesday to determine if they need to call an election for the creation of Emergency Service District 2 for sourthern Hunt County.

Ryan Biggers, fire chief for South Hunt County Fire Rescue, gave a detailed presentation on the reasons an ESD is needed. It would include volunteer fire departments in West Tawakoni, Quinlan and Tawakoni South Fire Rescue. He gave estimates of the cost of providing emergency services and the need for this type of funding.

Interested citizens may view his presentation on the Hunt County Commissioners Court Youtube channel for July 7, 2026 meeting.

ESDs would include a tax, which has a ceiling of 10 cents, but can be lower, depending on the needs of the district. The tax rate would be set by the five member board, which is appointed by the county commissioners. But, it cannot be higher than the cap of 10 cents. He also gave examples of what could happen to the fire insurance rate, which could potentially save homeowners in premium dollars.

A petition, requesting the creation of the district by going before the voters in November, was presented to the commissioners. There were more than 300 names on the petition, but a number of the signers were not from the affected area, so it has been culled down to 181. Only 100 signatures are needed, however the City of Hawk Cove has not joined in support, so signers in that city and its extra territorial jurisdiction have to be eliminated from the petition. The court’s attorney, Daniel Ray, said they will see if there’s still 100 legal names on the petition after taking out Hawk Cove signers.

Commissioners will take up the request to call for the election at the court’s meeting on Tuesday at 10 am. Should the court call the election, it will be placed on the November ballot.

In the meantime, if the election is called, Biggers and other supporters will be conducting town hall meetings to educate voters in south Hunt County on the need for the emergency services district.

Biggers was commended by commissioners and the public on the thorough presentation. Several citizens voiced their support for the ESD, including two retired professional firefighters. He said by voting “yes”, citizens will be “empowering our communities” with:

  • Professional Service— trained, equipped responders, available every hour of every day. Not dependent on who answered their pager this morning.

  • Sustainable Funding—A stable tax base replaces unpredictable county allocations. Plan for 5 years, not fight for next year’s budget.

  • Local Accountability—Open meetings. Public budget. Annual audit. A 5-member board your neighbors can walk up to and question directly.

Gamescape by Cinemark opens in Greenville

Gamescape by Cinemark opened on July 2 to the public in Greenville. This massive facility features a plethora of movie theatres, a large arcade, spacious bowling lanes, a sky obstacle course, and a pixel light room.

The movie theaters are what really stand out. All of the seats are fully reclined and even have a built in seat heater that can be turned on or off throughout the movie. Additionally, they have multiple D-Box seats, which are the seats that shake during the movie, that can all be adjusted or even turned off throughout the movie. Previously there was nowhere in the area to get this kind of experience until now.

Another unique feature that the new facility has is their concession stand. Unlike normal walk up to the counter and order stands, Gamescape has a supermarket type layout that allows consumers to see all the options and walk around choosing what they want before they pay for it. This should allow for smoother processes when using the concession stand.
