Quinlan Community Park Additions to Open
The Quinlan Community Park has been working on some major renovations and additions since November of 2025. We have word about when it will be completed.
The work being done on the park has gone into building two pickleball courts, lighting up the walking trails, exercise stations, disc-golf “tee boxes”, native landscape signage, a multi-purpose field to use, and site furniture.
The Tawakoni Current has been informed that these renovations should be complete and open to the public before the City’s Fireworks in the Park event that takes place on July 2.
Additionally, inside the fenced off area is a large sized sign showing how the grant money the city has received has been spent on the park.
If you haven’t stopped by to give it a peek, you may want to consider doing so.
East Tawakoni Hosts Kids Fishing Tournament

Julie Evans records weights of the fish caught.

Mayor Harold Chandler stills a fish to get the exact weight on the scales.
The Spirit of East Tawakoni held its second annual “Kids Fishing Tournament” Saturday at the SRA property, just east of the Two Mile Bridge with 75 children participating.
Organizer Kailea Phillips wasn’t worried about the early morning thunderstorms when she posted, “The sun is shining and the fish are biting!” There was no entry fee and organizers gave out free bait to those needing something to attract the fish. East Tawakoni Mayor Harold Chandler managed the scales at weigh in.
Age groups were 4 to 7 years old; 8 to 11 years old; 12 to 16 years old and special needs adults. Big fish in each age group brought $50; second place, $30; and third place, $20. Each child contestant got to weigh in one fish off their stringer.
4 - 7 age winners were: Judge Burt, 4.6 pounds; Prislynn Gordon, 2.0 pounds; and Cooper Bentley, 1.5 pounds;
8 - 11 age winners were Hudson Burt, 4.8 pounds; Brigham Barabas 1.15 pounds; and Teddy (last name omitted), 1.13 pounds;
12 - 16 age and S/N adults, Serenity Stevns, 2.1 pounds; Jayden Belk, 1.6 pounds; and Hudson Barabas and Gauge Price tied with 1.0 pound each.
Door prizes were given out to participants as their names were drawn.

Library Celebrates 43 Years of Serving Readers

Tawakoi Area Public Library patrons, board members and volunteers gathered Sunday to celebrate the “birth” of the library 43 years ago and opening the expanded facility 20 years ago.
It was once dubbed by the Texas Library System as “the smallest library in Texas” at 650 square feet, but the Northeast Texas Library System was amazed by the Tawakoni Area Public Library’s first six-month report.
TAPL board member and former President Virginia Johnson gave a history of the library as it celebrated 43 years serving the Tawakoni area and 20 years in its current building, which is six times the size of the first building.
She said when first librarian Jack Haydon reported that first six months had 526 library cards issued and 1,559 patrons came through the doors, the Northeast Texas system “was amazed”.
In attendance Sunday were several of the founding members, who got the first building constructed on land donated by JW Lancaster and family. They were Larry Briscoe, Sharon Underwood and Bill Slaughter, she said, plus several who did not make the event.
She also introduced the board members of 2003-2006, who saw the new, expanded addition to fruition. They were Librarian Vicki Nix, Board President Cindy Johnson, and members Kathleen Morgan, Tiffony Chapman, Deanna Upchurch and Johnson. Two other “special board members” who became longtime volunteers were Rose Walker and Clyde Souther.
Other individuals were named, who helped bring about the expansion “of the little library that could”, a play on words from the popular children’s book, “The Little Engine that Could”. She said the late Mac Southall’s gift of $40,000 got the ball rolling, plus the contractor, JC Gilmore came through in helping the library’s expansion project.

End of Year celebration honors staff, teachers
The end of 2025-26 school year was celebrated recently with money given out to local organizations and honoring staff and teachers for their teaching excellence.
Superintendent Jeff Irvin presented the Lake Area Shared Ministries director Dian Wright with $4,580 and another check for the same amount to Hunt County Kids’ director Vonda Jack. He wasn’t through. The district’s counselors received $7,186 and the QISD Education Foundation’s coffers were sweetened with $24,000, all coming from the district’s payroll deductions by employees.
During the end of year celebration, the superintendent paused for a special memoriam for the loss of three individuals, Richard Marshall, Michelle Trosper and Tony Moore.
Employees of the year were introduced: 2026 Elementary Teacher of the Year Lori Chaney from DC Cannon Elementary; Secondary Teacher of the Year Allison Gordner, Thompson Middle School; Auxiliary Staff Employee of the Year Julia McClanahan, FHS Cafeteria Manager; and Support Staff Employee of the Year Tracie Williams, AE Butler diagnostician.
Campus-Level Heroes recognized were: DC Cannon’s Sandy Devine, Brandy Roton and Lori Chaney; AE Butler Intermediate’s Gilda Ybarra, Tracie Williams and Karen Cooper; CB Thompson Middle School’s Donny Hendrickson, Christy Briggs and Allison Gordner; and WH Ford High’s Julia McClanahan, Ruth Mowell and Brittany Biggie.
Outgoing board member Rusty Case was recognized for his service on the board of trustees, as well as his work with the education foundation and other areas “wherever needed”.

Council sends request for fire district to voters
Quinlan City Council passed a resolution Monday night, providing consent to include the city in an emergency services district.
South Hunt County Fire Chief Ryan Biggers presented the request to the council, saying the proposed Hunt County Emergency Services District No. 2 would include the cities of Quinlan, West Tawakoni and Hawk Cove and their extraterritorial jurisdictions and all of southern Hunt County, which also includes a southern section of the City of Greenville and portions of East Tawakoni that are in Hunt County.
This district, if approved by the voters, would have a taxing authority of up to 10 cents per $100 valuation.
Fire departments included in this proposed district are South Hunt County Fire, West Tawakoni Fire and South Tawakoni Fire.
A petition was presented to Hunt County Commissioners Court on May 7 and the procedure started the ball rolling to make the proposed emergency district a reality.
Council Monay also approved a resolution to set a public hearing on the proposed annexation of certain property west of Quinlan. That hearing will be on July 13 at the council's regular meeting.
A sign variance was approved by the council and waived certain permit fees as requested by Quinlan ISD for a sign for the Early Childhood Center located at 401 Panther Path.
They discussed the water and waste water study being conducted by Kimley-Horn, but no action was taken.
Michelle Mayberry was elected unanimously by the council to continue as mayor pro-tem. Council also appointed members and/or directors to various boards, inlcuding the Economic Development Corporation board; Planning and Zoning Commission and the Quinlan Zoning Board of Adjustments. City Secretary Laura Kennemer said there are a few spots vacant on several boards, primarily alternates If anyone wishes to serve, contact Kennemer.
In addition to Mayor Jacky Goleman, council members present were Susan Hernandez, Mayberry, Tommy Underwood and Bill Slaughter. Miguel Serrano was not present.
