Weekly Fishing Report

Week of October 8th

By Jayce Jewett, Local Fisherman

Water temperatures are in the mid-70s this week, and the lake level is a little over a foot and a half below normal. Eater-size catfish are biting on punch bait, while hybrid bass are being caught on main lake underwater points and drop-offs using swimbaits and slabs. White bass are holding on main lake points and shallow humps, with trolling proving effective. Largemouth bass are being caught around main lake docks on small jigs, drop shots, and finesse soft plastics. They are also feeding heavily on shad around rocky areas, making shad-imitating lures a good choice.

Emberlyn Elston

FHS Junior comes to rescue of accident victim

Sometimes, the difference between life and death comes down to someone being willing to stop, step forward, and act.

Last Thursday night, 17-year-old Quinlan Ford High School student Emberlyn Elston did exactly that when she came upon a serious accident while driving home from work.

Emberlyn encountered a male who had been struck by a vehicle and was unconscious. Without hesitation, she pulled over, grabbed her tourniquet, and made her way through traffic to reach the injured man. While others drove by, Emberlyn immediately began assessing his condition and performing CPR.

Then came a moment that changed everything. On the 29th compression, Emberlyn found a pulse, and the man began breathing.

For a 17-year-old, the situation could have been overwhelming. But Emberlyn relied on the training, knowledge, and experience she had worked hard to develop throughout high school and her time serving as a Junior Volunteer Firefighter.

Through Quinlan Ford High School's Health Science pathway, Emberlyn has learned the importance of thinking systematically and following established protocols in high-pressure situations. Rather than freezing in the face of an emergency, she was able to assess the situation and take action when someone desperately needed help.

Her desire to serve others began early. As a freshman, Emberlyn joined the Quinlan Fire Department as a Junior Volunteer Firefighter, where she gained valuable experience responding to automobile accidents and general medical emergencies. Those experiences helped prepare her for the realities of emergency response and the responsibility that comes with being ready to help others.

Her high school clinical experiences brought everything full circle, allowing her education and hands-on training to become more than lessons learned in a classroom. On Thursday night, those skills became a real-world response when someone needed them most.

Emberlyn's actions are a powerful reminder of the value of career and technical education, community service, and the importance of learning skills that can save lives. Her willingness to stop and help demonstrates compassion, courage, and a commitment to serving others.

Quinlan Ford High School and the Quinlan community have a wonderful reason to be proud of Emberlyn Elston. At just 17 years old, she showed that being a hero isn't about age or recognition. It's about being prepared, having the courage to act, and choosing to help when it matters most. By Jessica Castilleja

Candidate forum held for West Tawakoni City Election Candidates

The Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted a Meet the Candidates Forum on Saturday, Oct. 10, providing an opportunity for residents to learn more about the individuals seeking public office and the issues facing the City of West Tawakoni. With the Nov. 3 election approaching, the forum focused on questions submitted by community members, highlighting concerns ranging from public safety and city staffing to infrastructure, financial accountability, economic development, and transparency in local government.
The mayoral race includes incumbent Mayor Chris Burkett and challengers Bill Creed (not present) and Jess Hill. The Place 4 City Council race includes incumbent James "Chemp" Chemplanikal and challengers Kathy Wendel (not present) and Dan Benson.

Residents submitted questions concerning road conditions, water systems, broadband access, and drainage improvements. Candidates were asked how they would prioritize infrastructure projects and balance immediate repairs with long-term maintenance and investment. Questions also addressed qualifications and oversight of contractors performing road and drainage work. Another topic involved authorization and accountability for work performed on city-owned or city-maintained infrastructure, including drainage ditches. Residents wanted to know what policies should govern such work, how unauthorized alterations should be addressed, and whether the same standards should apply to residents, contractors, and elected officials. City finances formed another major portion of the forum's prepared questions.
Candidates were asked how they would approach budget decisions if municipal revenue
declined, including which services should be protected and where spending reductions might be considered. Other questions addressed financial transparency, protection of money designated for specific purposes, and the balance between immediate municipal needs and long-term financial stability.

The Nov. 3, election will determine who serves in key leadership positions for West Tawakoni. Early voting begins Oct. 19 and continues through Oct. 30.
