Pet of the Week

Meet Thelma, proof that true love is still real. Thelma and her sister Louise were dumped on a county road with little hope of survival. Louise has since found her forever home,  and now Thelma is hoping her loving home is still out there.

This Pointer/Canaan Dog mix is 7 years old, calm, affectionate, and incredibly easy to love. She’s spayed, vaccinated, house-trained, and wonderful with kids, dogs, and even cats. Whether it’s a peaceful walk, a cozy couch nap, or just being by your side, Thelma is happiest simply sharing life with her person.

  • Gentle and loyal

  • Laid-back and loving

  • A perfect companion for quiet moments and warm hearts

As she edges closer to her senior years, Thelma doesn’t ask for much, just a soft place to land and someone to love her back.

Local Stories

Memorial Day Weekend

A salute to the fallen veterans will be an observance held at the Veteran’s Pavillion at West Tawakoni City Park on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 am.

Memorial Day weekend around Lake Tawakoni is usually centered on lake traffic, camping, fishing, live music, boating, and local gatherings rather than one large festival. Here are some of the better options shaping up for this year:

Outdoor & Family Activities

  • Lake Tawakoni State Park will be one of the busiest spots for Memorial Day weekend with camping, hiking, swimming, birdwatching, and ranger programs. The park calendar is already showing Memorial Day weekend activities and family programs.

  • West Tawakoni City Park is a good lakefront spot for picnics, fishing, and sunset gatherings over the holiday weekend.

  • Local fishing guides typically book heavily for Memorial Day catfish and hybrid striper trips.

Marina, Food & Live Music Scene

  • Many of the local marinas are expected to be the main social hubs for the weekend with RV traffic, boaters and cookout activity.

  • Deer Run Golf Course is a popular weekend option.

What To Expect Around the Lake

Typical Memorial Day weekend activity around Lake Tawakoni includes:

  • Boat ramps packed by mid-morning

  • Community yard sales around the lake area

  • RV and campground gatherings

  • Fishing tournaments and kayak traffic

  • Lakeside parties after dark

Local event calendars are still updating, so more concerts and community events may post later this week.

Quinlan Welcomes Big Texas Cafe

Quinlan welcomed the opening of Big Texas Cafe Monday, May 18, by showing just how supportive this community is. The restaurant stayed packed all day long. The staff was extremely attentive and to the each diner’s needs.

Big Texas Cafe is open from 7 am - 3 pm Sunday and Monday and 7 am - 9 pm Tuesday - Saturday. They have many different options, from breakfast dishes served all day to lunch and dinner options of burgers, paninis and steaks. What makes this even more appealing is that you can order from either menu at any time! So, if you are craving an 8 am ribeye or a 7 pm waffle, they have you covered!

We wanted to hear community feedback about the grand opening and Quinlan EDC Executive Director, Debi Darter, gave us just that. In talking about her dining experience she said, “The food was excellent, the staff was super friendly and I am ecstatic about trying the ribeye for dinner.”

Be sure to stop by and check them out sometime this week. You will not be disappointed!
