The water temperature is in the upper 80s to low 90s this week, while the lake level is a little more than a foot low. Trophy catfish are still making their summer run, and anglers can catch them using shad. Largemouth bass are holding tight to main lake docks, where anglers are finding success with swimbaits, shaky heads, and drop shots. White bass are holding on main lake points and shallow humps, with some schooling activity early in the morning and during the evening. Trolling and fishing with slabs have also been effective.

With football season starting that also means our Football contest is starting. Contestants will pick the outcome of three games each week as well as a tiebreaker. The winner each week will be given a $15 gift card, and the total score winner at the end of the 10-week contest will win a $150 gift card.

Meet Copper, your Back to School sidekick!

Tawakoni Plaza Phase 1 groundbreaking ceremonies were held Wednesday morning in West Tawakoni.

The historic event was emceed by Mayor Chris Burkett, who thanked everyone for attending. The invocation was led by Bill Slaughter, followed by the mayor introducing the contractor and engineer of the project.

The mayor said there had been numerous individuals and city councils that had a part in this becoming a reality.Burkett brought up city council members, city administer, city secretary, the land owners as well as the developers, West Tawakoni Economic Development Corporation, Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce and public works. Those members present got a hand at turning the ground for Phase 1, which will include a restaurant, retail store, gas station and liquor store. Two more phases are planned, which include a hotel and a residential phase. Mayor Burkett said these developments will bring more jobs for the area, as well as attract more tourism to the lake area.

Hunt County Commissioners “kicked the proverbial can down the road” on a land use zoning request from agriculture to planned development use Tuesday morning and rescheduled it for Monday morning’s special session at 10:00 am.

Dream Entertainment Labs is seeking a zoning change for 527 acres of land from Agriculture to Planned Development at 8293 CR 2272 for the purposes of creating an entertainment center in Precinct 2.

Resignations and new hires were released by Quinlan Independent School District last week following the regular board of trustee meeting.

The board accepted the resignations of Crystal Dodson, Keely Chamberlin, Monica Lubiani, Phillip Lentz and Taylor Sikes.

Recommended for employment at DC Cannon Elementary were Amy Miller, special education teacher; Amy Nichols, kindergarten teacher; Brookellynne Haak, assistant principal; and Dora Yates, first grade teacher; Elizabeth Koch, Special Education teacher; Jessica Cunningham, first grade teacher; and Kaitlin Shores, principal, moving from assistant principal at DC Cannon.

AE Butler Intermediate new hires include April Blomqvist, third grade teacher; Cassidy Cook, third grade teacher; Dawn Barham, third grade teacher; Julie Winter, special education co-teach; Kelli Lacy, assistant principal; Marci Kinch, fourth grade teacher; and Marianne Miller, special education co-teach.

Thompson Middle School new hires include Adrianne Danser, special education co-teach; Andrea Lofton, math teacher; Robert Cruthird, sixth grade science teacher; Sherry Denney, art teacher; Sheree Griffin, special education teacher; and Wesley Lucas, sixth grade teacher.

Ford High School hired Alex Lowry, social studies teacher; Brittany Sullivan, resource math teacher; and Dennis Socha, special education co-teach.

Teacher recommendations at Thompson Middle School also includes Margarita Dooley, history; Ashlynn Sanders, AG teacher; Madison Minter, sixth grade RLA; and Dolores Ruiz, RLA teacher.

Grace Prabhu was hired for social studies at Ford High; Jerry North, digital communications at Thompson Middle School; and Traci DeRose as a second grade teacher at DC Cannon.

WT EDC to meet Monday

West Tawakoni Economic Development Corporation will meet Monday, Aug. 31, at 5:30 pm. at the city council chambers.

This will be a special session. Announcements for this meeting include:
A. Hat Haven Co is the September Business of the Month. Customers who would like to design their own custom hats, book private parties, attend local markets or set up pop up oat at
community events can book with this through the Hat haven co. Facebook page
B. Job/Employment assistance offered by the workforce solution for north central Texas and
Tawakoni public library will be held at library dates and times TBA.
C. Kathy Bledsoe is welcomed onto the WTEDC board of directors.
D. The WTEDC has an opening on the board. You can get an application at city hall.

The EDC has quite and extensive agenda for Monday night. Budget planning workshop for there
next fiscal year. To hiring a new secretary for WTEDC. As well as discuss and take action of
rental property owed by the WTEDC located at 1300 E state highway 276.once the property is
listed the WTEDC with meet with interest applications in renting this location. It looks to be a
very exciting meeting

“My office was made aware that a group called “Center for Voter Information” has sent out prefilled ballot by mail applications (name and address only) to voters aged 65+ in Texas.

According to Texas Election Code, my office MUST receive a request from the voter to mail an application for ballot by mail. You will NEVER receive an unrequested or pre filled ballot by mail application from my office.

These letters are misleading because 1. In Texas you MUST provide all 8 digits of your Texas Drivers License, your Texas Personal Identification Card, or Texas Election Certificate issued by DPS (not the orange voter registration card) OR the last four digits of your social security number.

2. Voters who have already signed up for their ballot by mail are also getting these in the mail and think they have to sign up again.

Emergency Services District proposal to hold town hall

To inform the public of a proposed emergency services district in South Hunt County, there will be a town hall meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce building from 6 to 7 pm. The purpose is to inform the public how an ESD works and how it will benefit the area citizens in South Hunt County. Learn how a ESD works and how they will service the community. Questions will be
fielded by David Rutherford, Robert Gayden III and Kiron Searl. ESD District 2 will encompass South Hunt County Fire and Rescue, Tawakoni South Fire Department and Tawakoni Fire Department.

QISD enrollment nears the 3000 mark

Enrollment figures for the first day of school were reported to the Quinlan ISD board last week.

The number of students enrolled as of Aug. 17 were:

799 at Ford High School; 644 at Thompson Middle School; 654 at AE Butler Intermediate; and 803 at DC Cannon Elementary.

Day One enrollment was 2900 students.

West Tawakoni Council holds budget session

City of West Tawakoni City Council held a Budget Workshop Special Session meeting Tuesday, Aug. 25. All council members were in attendance to discuss the city’s budget for the
2026-2027 fiscal year. A 90-minute block was set for discussion only on areas each councilmember felt there could be an adjustment made to the final budget. This was Chris Kidwell’s last meeting as city administer.

Mays Lane getting a “do-over” this week

Mays Lane is getting worked on this week, starting Wednesday and hopefully be complete by Friday, Aug. 28. Citizens should expect heavy traffic delays. Plans have been made for Tawakoni Fire Department to help manage the traffic from that area.

West Tawakoni cleaning up starting Sept. 12

On Saturday, Sept. 12, a City Wide Clean up event is planned and coordinated by Keep West Tawakoni Beautiful. Information will be on the Facebook page. Everyone is asked to show up and help Keep West Tawakoni Beautiful.

Police department to auction confiscated items

On Saturday, Sept. 19, the West Tawakoni Police Department will auction off items it has confiscated. The auction will begin at 10 am at the West Tawakoni Water Plant.

The Quinlan Ford Panthers traveled to Gunter on Friday, Aug.21,  for their final scrimmage, battling hard from start to finish. The Panthers came up just short, falling 7-14, but the team gained valuable experience and got one final opportunity to prepare for the regular season.

Now, it’s time to turn the page! Friday Night Lights are back!

The Panthers open the 2026 season this Friday, Aug. 28, on the road in Lake Worth. Kickoff is 7 pm.

It’s going to be a BIG weekend of volleyball! 

The Lone Oak Lady Buffaloes are hosting a volleyball tournament Thursday through Saturday, and Quinlan Lady Panthers will be in attendance. 

But that’s not all! Both teams will also hit the court Friday night for regular-season action:

Quinlan Lady Panthers take on the Bonham Purple Warriors, while the Lady Buffaloes play Edgewood.

Come out and support these amazing athletes as they battle through a busy weekend of volleyball! Let’s pack the stands, bring the energy, and cheer on our girls!

The Quinlan Lady Panthers traveled across the lake Tuesday night to take on their neighbors, the Lone Oak Lady Buffaloes, in an exciting night of volleyball!

Varsity Lady Panthers battled hard but fell to Lone Oak in 3 sets to 1 (22-25, 15-25, 25-19, 13-25). JV2 Lady Panthers came away with a 2–1 victory, while JV fought hard but fell 0–2. We’re proud of all our athletes, Lady Panthers and Lady Buffaloes, for continuing to compete, fight, and represent South Hunt County.

On Friday, Aug. 21, the Lady Panthers competed in a volleyball tournament in Terrell at the Excel Center, going head to head with some of the area’s top teams.

On the first day, they went  2-1, earning their spot in the Silver A Bracket. They lost to 6A Red Oak, 11-25, 11-25; defeated 5A Seagoville, 25-13, 25-19; and beat 6A South Garland, 25-17, 25-23, putting the Lady Panthers in the Silver A Bracket.

On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Panthers continued to fight but unfortunately fell short, dropping both of their matches, first to 4A Troup, 19-25 and 16-25. Ford then lost to 6A Crowley, but won the first game 25-19, then fell 17-25, 13-15.

Despite the tough finish, this team showed determination, resilience, and plenty of fight. Every match is an opportunity to grow, and the Lady Panthers are gaining valuable experience as they continue their season!  

BIG WEEKEND FOR LONE OAK VOLLEYBALL! 

The Lone Oak Lady Buffaloes had a busy and exciting weekend, competing in Van's volleyball tournament while also taking care of business in a regular-season matchup!

The Lady Buffaloes kicked off tournament play Thursday, going 1-2 on the day with one hard-fought win and two losses To Texarkana, 23-25, 25-19. They then defeated Big Sandy, 25-13, 25-19. The Lady Buffaloes followed with a loss to Bullard, 20-25, 21-25.

After a well-deserved break from tournament action, Lone Oak returned to the court for a regular-season matchup against Kemp. The Lady Buffaloes came out strong and took care of business, winning 3 straight sets, 25-9, 25-16, 25-17.

Tournament play picked back up on Saturday, as the Lady Buffaloes faced Wills Point, continuing to battle and compete with plenty of determination. 

What a busy weekend for these girls! The Lady Buffaloes showed resilience, teamwork, and a willingness to keep fighting through every match.
