The water temperature is in the upper 80s to low 90s this week, while the lake level is a little more than a foot low. The crappie bite is good right now, with anglers catching them around bridge pilings on live minnows or small jigs. Largemouth bass are relating to main lake docks and points, where anglers are finding success with swimbaits, shaky heads, and jigs around docks. White bass are holding on main lake points and shallow humps, with some schooling activity early in the morning and during the evening. Trolling and fishing with slabs have also been effective.

Meet Rosie, a gentle girl ready to bloom in her forever home! At just 2 years old and 60 lbs, Rosie is a beautiful likely purebred Great Pyrenees with the sweet, gentle, and loyal personality that makes this breed so special. After being found as a stray, a kind family opened their home and gave her the second chance she desperately needed. Now, Rosie is ready to put down roots with a family of her very own.

Rosie has been living indoors and has proven to be an amazing companion. She’s house-trained, crate-trained, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and wonderful with kids, dogs, AND cats. She loves being close to her people and is happiest simply knowing she belongs.

Rosie is currently being treated for a heartworm-positive diagnosis, but don’t let that stop you from falling in love. TBC will help with the next steps in her treatment.

Every Rosie deserves a place where she can bloom. This sweet girl is ready to find hers.

As filing deadline has come and gone in West Tawakoni, several places will have contested races for city council and mayor in November.

Mayor Chris Burkett has filed for re-election and has drawn two opponents, Bill Creed and Jesse Hill.

For Place 4 on the city council, incumbent James “Chemp” Chemplanikal also has two candidates wanting his job, including Dan Benson and Kathey Wendel. Place 2 Ramsey Lindsey and Place 5 Cecelia Irvan are unopposed for their positions on the council. Irvan is seeking to complete the unexpired term on Place 5.

Filing deadline was Monday, Aug. 17. The election will be held during the November general election.

Quinlan City Council set the tax rate for the new fiscal year, which is the same rate as 2025-2026 for property owners here.

During a special meeting of the council Monday, a public hearing on the tax rate was held with no one showing up to question the new rate. Following the hearing, Mayor Jacky Goleman asked for a motion to adopt the 2026-2027 property tax rate.

Councilman Miguel Serrano made the motion, which got a second from Susan Hernandez. The vote was 5-0, which set the rate at .479000 per $100 valuation. Saying “yes” were Councilpersons Serrano, Hernandez, Michelle Mayberry, Tommy Underwood and Bill Slaughter.

The tax breaks down to .338641 for Maintenance and Operations and 0.140359 for Interest and Sinking Fund. This tax is to provide revenues for the payment of current expenditures and it will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate, because some of the debt was retired. “The tax rate will effectively be raised by 1.04 percent and raise taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $3.47,” said the meeting notice.

The Tawakoni Current Weekly Football Contest to begin

Starting on Thursday, Aug. 27, The Tawakoni Current kicks off its weekly football contest. Guess the winners of three football games scheduled Aug. 28 to Aug. 30 and win a $15 gift card. Entries must be submitted electronically by Friday at 5 pm each week.

EXIT Realty in Quinlan is scheduled to sponsor the 12-week contest with the participant with the most wins for the season receiving the grand prize of a $100 gift card.

Tawakoni Area Public Library hosts Social Crafters

Tawakoni Area Public Library hosts Social Crafters at the library Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Later this month on Aug. 31, when there will be a Paint Totes workshop.

The Paint Totes workshop will cost $15 to participate, which provides each participant everything needed. That will get a tote with a zipper bag and personal instruction. The library is located at 340 SH 276 West Tawakoni.

West Tawakoni VFD opens a cooling station

Tawakoni Volunteer Fire Department has opened its doors for a cooling station . If anyone is experiencing extreme heat conditions and are looking for a place to cool down, head to the fire station.

Chief Chris Burkett said, “Our doors at the fire department are open for you.” Doors are open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and may open on weekends, if temperatures don’t cool down.

American Legion plans steak dinner Saturdays

American Legion Post 517 in West Tawakoni has a steak dinner with baked potato, salad, roll and dessert every Saturday from 6 to 9 pm. Cost is $22. They also have Karaoke with Dyllon on Saturdays.

Substitute teacher orientation scheduled at QISD

Quinlan ISD has scheduled a substitute teacher orientation for Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 9 am to noon in the Joe Martin Administration, 401 E Richmond St. Bring two forms of identification and High School diploma or college transcript. Contact Stacy Watson at 903-356-2001 or [email protected].

Paint on canvas tonight at Amvets

Amvets at 1328 E State Highway 276 in West Tawakoni has Paint night today (Thursday) beginning at 6 pm. Cost is $35 and includes all the materials, including the canvas, and step by step instruction. Everyone is welcome to attend the painting event by How Great Thou Art, which is “Faith, Fun and Art wherever we go.”

Sports training facility coming to West Tawakoni

Has anyone been curious as to what is going up next to Tin Cup Liquor Store? Donnie Maze with ENLS-SUMR Productions is building Volley Ranch Beach. When finished it will be a sports training facility featuring three par three golf holes, batting cages, sand volleyball court
and an outdoor concert stage. It’s located at 245 W SH 276 West Tawakoni.

Brinwood ladies meeting tonight, cookbook coming soon

Brinwood Shores Ladies Club will meet tonight (Thursday) at 7 pm. The meeting is in the clubhouse. The club’s cookbook had a delay in printing, but will soon be “hot off the presses”.

Tawakoni Plaza ground breaking set for Aug. 26

Groundbreaking ceremonies for Tawakoni Plaza Phase 1 will be held at 9 am Wednesday, Aug. 26. Everyone is welcome to come out to 1638
E State Highway in West Tawakoni.

Phase 1 is scheduled to include a restaurant, retail shopping and a liquor store and gas station. Mayor Chris Burkett encourages everyone to come join and be a part of this “milestone event for our city.”

Keep West Tawakoni Beautiful committee to meet ^{by Stephannie Barnett}

Keep West Tawakoni Beautiful will hold its monthly meeting at City Hall in West Tawakoni today (Thursday) at 6:30. Everyone is welcome to join either in person or via YouTube. Agenda items include: a discussion on the next location for the Welcome to West Tawakoni sign; discuss landscape and Lighting around the first sign; and how to partner with West Tawakoni Fan Club.

They will also discuss the August yard of the month recipient: setting the next date for Adopt A Highway cleanup. KWTB encourages everyone to come out and help clean up State Highway 276.
A community wide cleanups are scheduled Sept. 12 and Oct. 10, as well as Lakefront Cleanup near the boat ramp on Oct. 24.

KWTB also maintains a Free Library in City Park. KWTB is always looking for donations and assistance in maintaining the library box. Reach out to the members on Keep West Tawakoni Beautiful if you interested in helping with their projects.

Jack and Jill 8-ball league starting at American Legion

American Legion Post 517 in West Tawakoni recently announced they
will be starting a new jack and Jill 8-ball pool division. The league starts on Sept. 6 and will consist of teams of male and female who are active 8- ball players with a combined skill level of 10.

New West Tawakoni business plans free barbecue

West Tawakoni’s newest business on State Hwy 276 is having a Customer Appreciation barbecue lunch Saturday. Tawakoni Laundry is hosting the lunch from 10:45 am until the food runs out.

They are located at 504 State Highway 276 and will be offering free sandwiches and chips.

Quinlan Ford Lady Panther standout Payton Perez has committed to Texas A&M–Texarkana to continue her softball and academic career beginning in 27-28.

The Ford High senior has been a dominant two-way force for Quinlan. As a sophomore, she was named District 13-4A Most Valuable Player, hitting .526 with 11 home runs, 40 RBIs, and posting a 1.71 ERA in the circle. She followed that with another stellar season, earning First Team All-District in 2026 and batting over .500 while continuing to anchor the Lady Panthers' pitching staff. Known for her power, consistency, and competitiveness, Perez has delivered big in key district matchups, including double-digit strikeout performances.

Quinlan ISD recently celebrated her commitment, recognizing the years of work and leadership that led to this moment. At A&M–Texarkana, she will join an Eagles program competing in the NAIA Red River Athletic Conference. Lady Panther fans will get one more season to watch Perez before she takes the next step in Texarkana. And Tawakoni Current congratulates Payton on this milestone. (Staff & AI researched)

Quinlan Lady Panthers win against PTTA Fate

What a night for Quinlan Ford Volleyball! The Lady Panthers took down PTTA Fate 3–0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-14) winning three straight sets and never letting up! 3 straight sets. 1 big win.

Quinlan Ford will be back in action this weekend; Friday and Saturday in Terrell for a tournament at the Excel Center. Come out and support the Lady Panthers as they keep the momentum rolling!
