The water temperature is in the low 90s this week, and the lake level is down a little less than a foot. Trophy catfish are on the move this week and are being caught throughout the main lake when using gizzard shad. White bass are holding on main lake points and shallow humps, with some schooling during the early morning and evening hours. Anglers are finding success by trolling and fishing with slabs. Largemouth bass are relating to main lake docks and brush piles, where they are being caught on large worms, drop shots, and swimbaits.

Quinlan City Council held a budget workshop Monday, then set the proposed tax rate for Fiscal Year 2026-27.

City Administrator Aaron Adel went over the city’s final proposed budget. Adoption of the new fiscal year budget is scheduled after a public hearing during the regular meeting next Monday at 7 pm at the council chambers. Then on Monday, Aug. 17, there will be a special meeting at 7 pm to adopt the tax rate.

Adel said they received the certified tax values from the Hunt County Appraisal District last week. “With no tax rate change, the proposed tax rate would be 0.479000,” she said. The proposed Maintenance and Operations tax rate is .338641, an increase from the 2025 adopted rate of 0.329198. This is the tax rate per $100 valuation.

With no total rate change proposed, the 2026 property tax revenue going into the general fund is $667,823, while last year’s generated $660,146. This comes as the appraisal district Homestead Taxable Value in Quinlan averages $183,751, while Tax Year 2025 median taxable value (for detached single family residences) was $178,760, a 2.9 percent change.

Her calculations, based on the median taxable value of a detached single-family residence as reported by the appraisal district shows the $183,751 valued residence would generate $880.17 for 2026, while the rate in 2025 generated $856.26.

Councilman Place 2 Bill Slaughter made the motion to approved the proposed tax rate, while Place 5 Councilman Miguel seconded. Place 1 Susan Hernandez and Place 4 Michelle Mayberry voted For. Place 3 Councilman Tommy Underwood was absent.

The final proposed budget will be presented for consideration at next week’s council meeting for adoption following the public hearing.

The City of West Tawakoni City Council met Tuesday in a special session and conducted a budget workshop for Fiscal Year 2026-27.

Council appointed Kathy Bledsoe as a director on the West Tawakoni
Economic Development Corporation Board. She brings a wealth of knowledge in banking, cyber security and terrorism. The council unanimously voted Bledsoe in as a director for the EDC.

The West Tawakoni Economic Development Corporation awarded Wagon Wheel Hotel owners Mike and Chhaya Bhaka a Facade Grant as they have spent more than $65,000 in renovations and upgrades at the hotel located on SH276. Rich and Christina Dinkela purchased the hotel in April 2026.

With the filing deadline for either council or mayor in West Tawakoni about two weeks away, all three incumbent council positions have submitted their applications to be on the November ballot.

City Secretary Mari Chumley said Mayor Chris Burkett has not finalized his application, however Councilmen Ramsey Lindsey, Place 2; and James “Chemp” Chemplanikal, Place 4, have submitted their applications, as did Cecelia Irvan for the unexpired term of Place 5.

Monday, Aug. 17, is the last day to file an application for a place on the ballot. Applications are available at City Hall during normal business hours, which are 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday.

Now that most students and families have had an opportunity to meet their teachers this week, it will be a “GO” for Monday, Aug. 10.

Boles, Lone Oak and Quinlan ISD schools begin Monday for the 2026-2027 school year.

Quinlan ISD invites the public to the annual Meet the Panthers Friday Aug. 7 at 7 pm at Lytal Field. All Fall sports and band will be participating.

Media Day will be starting that morning at 8 am with football, followed by band at 9 am, cheer at 10 am, drill teams at 10:30 am and concluding with volleyball at 11 am.

Lone Oak ISD will hold their “Meet the Teacher” Friday at all campuses, before they head over to Buffalo Stadium to “Meet the Buffaloes”.

All campuses will greet students and families from 5:30 to 7 pm Friday. Then at 7 pm, it will be Meet the Buffaloes immediately following. “Help us kick off another exciting year of Buffalo athletics! Meet the Buffaloes is one of our favorite Lone Oak traditions and gives the community an opportunity to celebrate our student-athletes, cheerleaders, band, and mascots as we begin a new school.”

The Tawakoni Current is bringing back the Weekly Football Contest this fall, beginning with the Aug. 27 edition.

There will be three games listed—one each from high school, college and professional. Contestants will have until Friday at 5 pm to submit their guesses electronically. There will be a fourth game that will require the guessing of the final score of the game for the tiebreaker. Winner will receive a gift card and the overall season winner will receive a $100 gift card.

With school starting next week, volleyball is kicking off their season. Quinlan, Boles and Lone Oak season start Aug. 11. 

Ford’s Lady Panthers scrimmage Friday at Ford High beginning a 2 and then again at 4 pm, going up against PTAA Greenville first, then Heritage Christian. They will scrimmage the Boles Lady Hornets Saturday at 9 and 10 am. First regular season game for the Lady Panthers will be at South Garland Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 6:30 pm with the JV1 at 5:30 and JV2 at the same time.

The Lady Buffaloes of Lone Oak start their season also Tuesday with Greenville Christian coming to Lone Oak at 5:30 pm.

After the scrimmage against Ford on Saturday morning, the Lady Hornets host Fruitvale Tuesday, Aug. 11, starting with JV at 5 pm.

Tawakoni Fire Department is planning the 9/11 Remembrance event that
takes place every year at the fire station. This week’s meeting with the volunteers focused on reading the names of those who died that day.

Tawakoni Area Public Library is planning a Pokémon Club Kickoff Saturday. There will be snacks, games and prizes Saturday from 12 noon to 1:30 pm.
