Meet Jenny, the sweet senior with the smile that melts hearts!

She’s a COOL dog! 

At 10 years young, Jenny is proof that the best companions only get sweeter with age. This beautiful Shepherd mix was surrendered after her owner’s declining health made it impossible to care for them. Despite the changes in her life, Jenny has remained gentle, loving, and ready to start her next chapter with a family of her own.

With her adorable little stub tail, soft brown-and-white coat, and happy smile, Jenny is impossible not to love. She’s house-trained, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and wonderful with kids and cats. Jenny loves walks, enjoys being around people, and would happily spend her days by your side soaking up attention and affection.

The Tawakoni Current is revving up for the new football season with a weekly Football Contest, starting the Aug. 7 edition.

A winner each week will be selected by picking the most correct games that week. The winner will receive a $10 gift certificate from a local business, culminating at the end of the season with a grand prize of a $100 gift card. So, participants will want to enter each week, as the person with the total number of correct guesses will receive the prize. There will be a high school, college and professional football game listed each week, plus a tiebreaker, which will be guessing the score of a selected game from that week. Hope this make sense.

TTC is planning weekly coverage of South Hunt County varsity teams in both football and volleyball. “We’ll recap the last week’s games and look ahead to the next game,” said co-founder and editor Bill Slaughter.“ So, watch for the games to be listed beginning Thursday morning, Aug. 7.” Participants must have their scores submitted by 5 pm each Friday.

Stage 3 of the Quinlan Community Park was officially opened last week with a ribbon cutting by officials of Quinlan ISD, City of Quinlan and the city’s Economic Development Corporation.

The park development started in 2015. It has been a joint project of the city, Quinlan Economic Development Corporation and a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife. Phase 3 expansion project came to $560,109, breaking down to $160,109.36 from the city; $150,000 from QEDC and TPWD grant each and $100,000 from QISD.

Along with the existing playground, splash pad, basketball courts and covered picnic pavilions, the community now has a quarter-mile paved walking trail around the disc golf course, exercise stations and pickle ball courts. The exercise stations have strength machines.

While at the park last week, the Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce had a tree planted in memory of Stacy Earls, who died May 15, 2024. She was described as “A shining star to this community” and was involved in many programs throughout Hunt County, including serving as president of Altrusa in Greenville, plus the Quinlan Education Foundation and as an officer of the LTRCC.

Her former employer and cousin, Daniel Earls wrote, “We would like to thank the Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce for commemorating Stacy Earls’ tree at the park near DC Cannon Elementary today …Stacy would be thrilled to be remembered by, and with, nature; her true happiness. As you visit the new walking trail at the community park, please pay a visit to Stacy Earls’ memorial tree. Stacy loved the Quinlan community and was heavily involved with several organizations including the LTRCC and Quinlan Education Foundation. She graced others with laughter, wisdom, kindness and love beyond measure. She is heavily missed.”

For years, Quinlan ISD has offered summer meals on our campuses. But with the district spanning 152 square miles, serving four municipalities and portions of four counties, district officials knew many of students living in rural areas simply couldn't get to school during the summer.

“We wanted to bring nutritional support and learning opportunities directly to the children who needed them most—in their own neighborhoods,” said a district spokesperson.

That vision inspired the dream of transforming a retired school bus into a traveling café where students could enjoy a hot meal, discover great books, participate in hands-on learning activities, and continue growing academically throughout the summer.

Today, that dream is a reality thanks to the partnership between Quinlan ISD, United Way of Hunt County, and the ACE program.

The Mobile Learning Café still turns heads as it travels country roads, decorated like a 1950s diner with a checkerboard floor, lipstick-red booths, teal countertops, and shelves filled with books. Inside, students find a welcoming space with a library, learning centers, games, crafts, and delicious meals—all designed to combat both summer hunger and the "summer slide"

“As we celebrate this 10 year milestone, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has made the Mobile Learning Cafe possible,” she said. “Thank you to our amazing staff volunteers, whose enthusiasm and dedication bring learning and smiles to every stop; to our Transportation Department for keep the Mobile Learning Cafe on the road safely each summer and a special thanks to the driver for all 10 years, Ruth Grubbs. Thank you to our Food Service Department for preparing and serving nutritious meals.” She listed the many donors, including A & J Steel, Miller Farms, Tommy and Lisa Underwood, Tim and Kathleen Witte, Metro Service, Wanda Fouse, Larry and Debra Crosby, Jacky and Kathy Goleman,, Antoinette Greenlee, Lindsey Ewert, Tricia Parker, Ralph and Jeanette Moser, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Hunt County Kids, Atmos Energy and Sharyland Utilities.

A special thank you also goes to our wonderful host sites for welcoming us back year after year: Duck Cove Marina, Hawk Cove City Hall and Quinlan Community Park. The bus will continue to run this week through today (Thursday) and next week, Monday-Wednesday for the 2026 season. Final day is Wednesday, July 29.

“Here's to ten years of feeding minds, nourishing bodies, and building brighter futures—one stop at a time. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey,” she said.

Believe it or not, it’s time to get ready for the new school year. QISD’s back to school fair is Thursday, July 30. Many area churches and businesses have started promoting their back to school programs.

There’s valuable information, plus free haircuts, hot dogs and Hunt County Kids school supplies, plus Health Screenings and giveaways.

“Our school nurses are excited to welcome students back for the school year,” said a district spokesperson. “To make sure your child is ready for day one, please take note of these important health requirements and an early start time update for our vaccine clinic.”

The vaccine cliic will start at about 3:15 pm and runs through 7 pm at Ford High School Library. “Hunt County Health Department is setting up early so students can get their vaccinations early and receive their free haircuts, resources and school supplies.
